Seven Suspected Kidnappers Killed In Anambra, As Police Rescue Victims

Seven suspected kidnappers have been killed in Anambra, while two others were captured by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, made the disclosure in an interview in Awka on Saturday.

Chukweumeka said that the incident took place at Aguleri in the Anambra East Local Council Area of the state at around 4.00 p.m. on May 10.

The spokesman said that two of the suspects were captured at the point of collecting a ransom of five million naira.

He said that the suspects later took security men to their hideout, where some kidnapped people were rescued unhurt at about 8.30 p.m.

Chukwuemeka said the ransom was recovered when the suspects, who were killed engaged security men in a shoot-out.

He said that one of the rescued victims, simply identified as Mr Anthony, was kidnapped at Onitsha, a week ago and taken to a  building, belonging to a Lagos-based businessman.

A Lebanese contractor with Consolidated Construction Company, Mr Roumauos Marroun, kidnapped at the gate of the Igbariam Campus of the Anambra State University on May 7, was among those who regained their freedom.

Fresh Killings: Jonathan Unhappy With Service Chiefs

Indications emerged that President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday gave his service chiefs the knocks over fresh killings, especially of security personnel in Borno, Nasarawa, Yobe and other states and directed them to tighten their belts and save the Federal Government from avoidable embarrassment.

It was learnt that the president directed the security chiefs present at an emergency meeting he held with them yesterday to devise result-oriented measures that would restore law and order to the country, especially the north-east and north-central where the killing of security agents and other innocent Nigerians has been on the rise.

Information Nigeria reports that following news of the Ombatse killing of scores of security agents in Nasarawa State, Jonathan made a quick return to the country suspending his trip to Namibia from South Africa.

According to a source privy to discussions at the high level security meeting, the President made it clear in no uncertain terms that he was disappointed with the service chiefs over the endless killing in the country and sought an explanation.

“President Jonathan was not happy at all. He spoke for a very long time, asking some critical questions. He told the security chiefs he would not tolerate a situation where policemen and soldiers were being killed like chickens, and ordered the security chiefs to sit up and put an end to the bloodletting,” the source said.

The source adds that the security chiefs cited some unguarded utterances made by some politicians and other eminent personalities in the north as reason and even cited the Baga massacre as a case point.

“They (security chiefs) told the president they were doing their best but the president replied, ‘I am not satisfied with your best. You must bring an end to this shameful act once and for all’.”

Mob Sets Suspected Armed Robbers Ablaze In Calabar

Frustrated by the rampaging activities of armed robbers in their area, residents of Mayne Avenue in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, turned judge and executioner as they arrested, beat and set ablaze five suspected robbers in the last two weeks.

Last Wednesday morning another suspected armed robber was overpowered by a vigilante group in the neighborhood and set ablaze after being beaten.

According to Chief Abraham Effiong, an eye witness to the recent lynching of a robbery suspect not far from Holy Child Secondary School on Goldie Street near Mayne Avenue, armed robbers have been terrorizing and making life difficult for them.

“We were woken up by the screams of this victim. I could see how young boys from the neighborhood surrounded him and he could not escape from them. They beat and poured fuel on him and burnt him. They said he went to rob one of the provision stores,” he said.

However, he revealed that the corpse of the victim was recovered by the Police who stormed the area after the suspect had been set ablaze.

When contacted, State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP John Umoh said he was yet to be briefed about the incident but condemned the summary execution of suspected armed robbers in the state, describing it as jungle justice; an act the police will not fold its arm and watch continue.

Court Orders Farouk Lawan, Emenalo To Stand Trial For $620,000 Bribery

An Abuja High Court has dismissed the application to quash bribery charges filed against former chairman of the House of Representatives on Fuel Subsidy scam, Farouk Lawan, and the committee’s secretary Boniface Emenalo, over the receipt of $620,000 bribe from oil mogul; Femi Otedola.

Presiding Judge; Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi on Friday, rejected the application in favor of the prosecution, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offenses Commission, ICPC, on the three grounds.

The court ruled that it has jurisdiction, as there is evidence of crime against the defendants and that the charges are not an abuse of court process.

Counsel to the lawmakers said he would consult with his clients before deciding on appeal.

The two lawmakers were accused of demanding and collecting $620, 000 bribe from Mr Otedola, to remove the name of his companies  from the list of companies culpable in fuel subsidy fraud.

Jonathan In Top-Level Meeting With Security Chiefs Over Bama, Nasarawa Killing

Heads of all the security agencies in the country on Friday met with President Goodluck Jonathan to review the gruesome murder of over eighty members of the Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa and the Bama attack in Borno state.

The meeting which was attended by the Chief of Defence staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki,  the Chief of Naval Staff, Dele Ezeoba, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar and the  Director General of the State Security Service, Ita Ekpenyong, lasted for about two and half hours.

However, Chief of Army staff – Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, was represented by Maj. General Emmanuel Bassey, Chief of Policy and plans in the Army Headquarters.

Though the security chiefs declined to speak with the press, the Inspector General of Police who wore a black arm band to the meeting, described the murder of the police officers as a sad development for the country.

Meanwhile, Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd), who attended the meeting briefly before he was excused to allow the president meet with the service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police separately, expressed sadness at the killing of security personnel who are paid to protect Nigerians, however assured that the police would not carry out a reprisal attack on the community.

According to him, “it is sad that those who are protecting lives and property are becoming the targets of various insurgents and criminality be it political or otherwise.

“The security agencies particularly the police will not want to go and revenge, it is not going to help us because they are supposed to protect lives and property; going to revenge will not douse tension and will bring about lack of confidence in the system. So, we will strictly discourage that” he said.
